My Journey of Building a Successful Firm: Insights and Lessons Learned

Two years ago, I took a leap of faith and shared my plans to establish my own agency here. Fast forward to last night – a significant milestone was reached when we inked a one-year contract worth six figures. This deal is not just a win; it also propels our Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) past the one million mark next month, despite some challenges along the way due to unforeseen events like an accident and the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m grateful for the support I’ve received on this platform, and I’m here to share some key insights I’ve gained throughout this journey, particularly focused on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and client management.

Key Lessons from My Experience

  1. Stay Within Your Means
    In the pursuit of growth, we sometimes overcommitted to projects that stretched our resources too thin. Taking on clients that require more manpower than we could realistically support led to delays and dissatisfied customers. It’s crucial to understand your capacity and not let ambition cloud your judgment.

  2. Be Present for Your Team
    Starting my agency while living in Munich and managing distant teams resulted in missed opportunities for mentorship and guidance. My initial remote setup caused frustration among my early hires, leading to a high turnover rate. Establishing a local office and being actively involved has not only improved team performance but has also fostered a positive and effective working environment.

  3. Prioritize Content Relevance
    When considering content writing projects, it’s vital to have writers familiar with the specific industry, or, at the very least, ensure the client is willing to share their knowledge and data. Optimizing existing content rather than generating new pieces often yields better results.

  4. Optimize Before Building Links
    My observations over the past few years have shown that the quality of backlinks is heavily influenced by the optimization of the target pages. In recent months, I’ve learned that ensuring our pages are well-optimized before launching a link-building campaign is essential. This strategic approach has significantly improved our outcomes for clients.

  5. Know When to Walk Away
    In this industry, it’s important to recognize when a client relationship becomes unhealthy. Some clients may demand excessive control or involvement, leading to unnecessary stress. Being prepared to disengage from such clients is crucial for maintaining your team’s morale and your own well-being.
