Tackling Home Page Ranking Challenges for Your Photography Website
As a professional photographer, keeping your portfolio website updated is crucial for maintaining visibility in a competitive market. However, like many creatives, I found myself neglecting my site after making a significant update in 2022. Unfortunately, I overlooked the important aspects of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and monitoring search performance.
Fast forward to March 2024, when I casually checked Google Search Console (GSC) and noticed a concerning drop in both rankings and impressions. This decline coincided with the latest Google updates, and it prompted me to take immediate action.
Recognizing that my site was primarily focused on displaying my portfolio, I made a strategic decision to redirect my domain to a new homepage that includes a more comprehensive introduction to my work and services. My goal was to better target specific search terms such as “Phoenix commercial photographer” and “commercial photographer Phoenix.”
In addition to the homepage revamp, I began optimizing various elements of my website, including alt tags for images and internal linking structures. While these changes led to a noticeable increase in overall rankings and impressions for some of my content, an unexpected issue arose: my homepage appeared to have completely lost its ranking.
Interestingly, some of my portfolio pages still perform well in search results, but it baffles me that the targeted phrases aren’t returning any results for my homepage URL.
