Over the past five years, my professional focus has been centered around traditional search engine optimization (SEO) strategies—optimizing content, building backlinks, and enhancing rankings within search engine results pages (SERPs). However, recent shifts in the digital landscape have piqued my curiosity about emerging avenues for driving website traffic, particularly through the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) such as Google AI Overview, Perplexity, and ChatGPT’s browsing capabilities.

Understanding AI-Generated Search Results

Lately, I’ve observed an intriguing trend: some websites are garnering traffic directly from responses generated by LLMs. These AI systems are increasingly serving as frontline information sources, often summarizing or referencing content from the web in their answers. This raises the question—can websites strategically position their content to be included in these AI outputs? And if so, how predictable and reliable is this method?

Key Questions and Challenges

While exploring this territory, several critical questions emerge:

  • Intentional Inclusion: Is it possible to intentionally influence LLMs to incorporate your content into their responses? What strategies or signals are effective in achieving this?

  • Keyword or Prompt Targeting: Can specific keywords or prompts reliably trigger citations of your site? Is there a methodology to ensure your content gets referenced consistently?

  • Factors Influencing AI Citations: How do elements like schema markup, domain authority, citation loops, or content freshness impact the likelihood of being included in AI responses?

  • Tracking and Measurement: Is there a dependable way to monitor traffic generated through AI responses? How can website owners distinguish AI-driven visits from traditional search traffic?

Ongoing Experiments and the Search for Principles

To address these questions, I am currently developing a side project dedicated to analyzing and testing various hypotheses regarding AI-driven traffic. This initiative is purely exploratory—aimed at understanding what strategies might work, what doesn’t, and where the noise lies in this emerging field.

The landscape feels reminiscent of the early days of SEO—full of chaos, unknowns, and a lack of established best practices. The rules are still being written, which makes experimentation both exciting and essential.
