Today, I’d like to discuss a common challenge many content creators face when optimizing websites for search engines. As I work on a client’s site (let’s keep the details confidential for privacy reasons), I’ve encountered a situation that perfectly illustrates the intricacies of keyword mapping and optimization.

In this particular case, the focus is on a mixed martial arts (MMA) studio. The objective is clear: the client aims to rank for key search phrases like “MMA” and “mixed martial arts.” Naturally, I believe it’s essential to optimize the homepage title and H1 tags to boost visibility for these high-value keywords.

However, there’s a twist. The site already has two dedicated SEO pages structured like this:

  • /information/mma/
  • /information/mixed-martial-arts/

Both of these pages are well-optimized and currently outperform the homepage in search engine rankings. This raises an important question: how should I proceed with optimizing the homepage while maintaining the existing informational pages?

One approach could be to optimize the homepage for one or both keywords while allowing the informational pages to coexist, with the hope that search engines will recognize the intent behind the content. Alternatively, I could consider selecting one term to pursue more aggressively by redirecting the associated page directly to the homepage.

The decision is not straightforward. Striking the right balance is crucial. Should I merge efforts, or is it better to focus on distinct keywords for each page to avoid conflict?
