Navigating Long-Term Challenges After a Website Migration: A Case Study
Website migrations are a pivotal moment for any online business, and they can yield significant benefits when executed correctly. However, they also bring a unique set of challenges, particularly when it comes to recovering lost traffic. As a marketing designer at a startup, I recently experienced the impact of a website redesign and migration that has left us grappling with a sharp decline in site traffic.
Last year, we undertook a major overhaul of our website, transitioning from Elementor to the Gutenberg editor paired with ACF blocks. This decision was rooted in a desire for improved performance and a more streamlined user experience. However, since our migration in early November 2024, our website’s traffic has significantly dwindled. Previously, we enjoyed a steady 500-700 page views each week, but this number has plummeted to a concerning 100-200 views per week.
Despite our efforts to mitigate these issues by preparing adequately for the switch, the results have been less than favorable. We continue to release weekly blog posts and have managed to secure four high-quality backlinks each month, sourced from reputable sites with solid authority scores and minimal spam. Yet, we are left contemplating what steps we can take to restore our previous traffic levels.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, here are some strategies to consider for rebounding after a migration:
-
Audit Your Analytics: Begin by thoroughly analyzing your traffic data. Look for patterns—are certain pages experiencing more significant drops than others? Utilize tools like Google Analytics to track behavior flow and identify potential content gaps.
-
Optimize for SEO: Ensure that your website’s SEO is intact post-migration. Check for broken links, missing title tags, and meta descriptions. Implement keyword optimization on your new content and utilize schema markup where appropriate.
-
Enhance User Experience: Review the usability of your site. Is it easy to navigate? Are there any technical issues like slow loading times or mobile responsiveness that could be deterring visitors? Improving these factors can enhance user Engagement and potentially boost traffic.
-
Promote Your Content Effectively: Beyond just posting blogs, actively promote your content through social media channels, email newsletters, and relevant online communities. Create engaging snippets that entice clicks and shares.
-
Leverage Backlinks: While it’s great that you’re securing quality backlinks, consider reaching out to those same websites for potential guest blogging opportunities or collaborations
