Navigating Service Area Landing Pages: How Many is Too Many?

I’m excited to share my journey as I launch a new service-based business within a specialized home health niche. My long-term goal is to expand my reach across the entire state, eventually branching out to the wider southwestern United States. However, for now, my focus is on establishing a strong presence in major counties across Southern California.

To effectively optimize my website for local searches, I’m planning to create core pages that encompass Southern California as a whole, complemented by structured data schema that highlights this region. Additionally, I’ll maintain a Google Business Profile to establish my local presence.

The crux of my strategy involves creating targeted landing pages for each of my eight service offerings. I intend to focus on the wealthiest and most populous cities within selected counties. This translates to about 25-30 individual landing pages, each dedicated to specific services in 5-10 cities per county.

However, I find myself pondering—is this too ambitious? Could such a broad array of landing pages lead to internal competition that could hamper my overall SEO efforts? What’s the most effective way to structure this without diluting my online presence?

Here are some considerations:

  1. Avoiding Overlap: Creating too many landing pages for closely related services might lead to keyword cannibalization—the situation where two or more pages compete for the same search terms. Consider whether each page will provide unique, valuable content that targets distinct keywords.

  2. Geographic Relevance: While focusing on affluent cities is essential, could there be value in consolidating some pages? Merging related services into fewer, broader pages that still target specific counties might reduce the risk of diluting your SEO impact.

  3. User Intent and Experience: Think about the customer journey. Would potential clients prefer a more streamlined approach? A well-structured site with clear navigational paths can enhance user experience, which indirectly benefits SEO.

  4. Focus on Quality Over Quantity: Ultimately, it’s better to have several high-quality landing pages that are properly optimized for search engines than to inundate your site with numerous pages that don’t serve your audience effectively.
