Among these, Google’s AI Overview and AI Mode have garnered considerable attention—and concern—within the publishing community. As a publisher observing these developments firsthand, I feel compelled to highlight the potential adverse effects these features may have on the livelihoods of countless content creators worldwide.

Understanding Google’s AI Initiatives and Their Implications

Google’s AI Overview and AI Mode are designed to enhance user interactions by providing succinct summaries of web content and integrating AI into search functionalities. While seemingly innovative, these features impose certain conditions on publishers: to be included in these AI-driven snippets and summaries, publishers may be compelled to allow Google to crawl their content for AI training and data aggregation purposes. Conversely, refusal risks exclusion from search results altogether—placing publishers in a difficult position that resembles coercion rather than choice.
