Overcoming SEO Challenges: My Journey in E-Commerce Ranking

Hello, fellow entrepreneurs!

Today, I want to share my journey while navigating the complex world of SEO for my e-commerce business, which I’ve been running for about a year and a half. Along the way, I’ve learned valuable lessons, made plenty of mistakes, and am now seeking your insights to move beyond my current obstacles.

Refining Site Architecture

Initially, I encountered significant challenges with my website’s architecture. After realizing it wasn’t optimally structured, I took the time to revise it by creating distinct collection pages. Previously, multiple products were grouped together when, in fact, there was sufficient keyword volume to justify separate pages. This restructuring took place over six months ago and has greatly improved the usability of my site.

Backlink Strategy Overhaul

In the early stages, my approach to acquiring backlinks was misguided. I ended up with low-quality links and some not-so-reputable private blog networks (PBNs), which led to an unnatural backlink profile. Recently, I’ve shifted my focus to obtaining quality backlinks from niche-specific blogs in my country, along with press releases from reputable sites. I’ve also adjusted my strategy to utilize more natural anchor text instead of fixating on exact keyword matches.

Analyzing the Competition

Interestingly, I’ve noticed that my competitors, who have been in the industry for 10 to 15 years, don’t seem to have robust SEO practices in place. Ignoring metrics like Domain Authority or Domain Rating for a moment, their backlink profiles are lacking, yet they still dominate the search results. While I don’t view age as a definitive SEO factor, I suspect their long-standing presence may contribute to their established rankings. Could this be affecting my ability to compete?

Additionally, I’ve been examining brand search volume as another potential factor. My competitors attract about 700-800 searches per month, while my business lags behind with only 50-100. Recently, I’ve been working on increasing my brand awareness through targeted advertising. If I sustain a growth trend that elevates my brand search volume to around 3,000-4,000 per month, would that have a tangible impact on my SEO? Or is it something that Google overlooks?
