Unexpected Increase in Blog Traffic: Are Bots Responsible?

Over the past three days, I have observed a significant and unusual surge in traffic to my website. Typically, my daily visitors range between 30 and 50, but recently, this number has climbed to approximately 200 per day, distributed evenly throughout each day. This abrupt spike began on October 7th, coinciding with the purchase of my new domain on October 8th, 2024.

Although I am a UK-based business, the majority of this increased traffic appears to be originating from the United States. Interestingly, the traffic sources seem different from the typical data centers and cloud providers like Council Bluffs or Ashburn, which are common in bot traffic activity.

This raises several questions about the nature of this surge:

  • Could this influx be caused by bot activity rather than genuine visitors?
  • Are there specific indicators pointing to automated traffic rather than human Engagement?
  • What steps can I take to analyze and filter out potential spam or malicious bots?
  • How can I ensure that my analytics reflect accurate user Engagement?

Understanding and managing sudden traffic fluctuations is crucial for maintaining accurate website analytics and security. Techniques such as examining referral sources, analyzing session durations, and implementing bot detection tools can help distinguish between real users and automated traffic.

If you’re experiencing similar issues or have insights on potential causes, I welcome your suggestions and shared experiences. Monitoring your website’s traffic patterns diligently helps you better understand your audience and safeguard your online presence.
