Understanding and Responding to a Coordinated Negative SEO Campaign

In the ever-evolving landscape of digital marketing, even seasoned professionals can find themselves targeted by malicious tactics such as negative SEO attacks. Recently, I encountered a sophisticated example of such an attack, which has significantly impacted my core keywords. I wanted to share the details for awareness and seek insights from the community on effective mitigation strategies.

The Nature of the Attack

Since October 23, I have observed the creation of over 100 spammy domains that appear to be part of a coordinated effort. These domains follow a recognizable pattern:

seo-anomaly-[city].site/space/online/website

The cities included in the domain names are diverse, featuring Beijing, Delhi, Mumbai, Cairo, Istanbul, Jakarta, among others.

Characteristics of the Spam Domains and Link Patterns

  • Anchor Text: All backlinks from these domains include identical anchor text:
“TELEGRAM SEO_ANOMALY – SEO BACKLINKS, BLACK-LINKS, TRAFFIC BOOST”
This suggests a deliberate attempt to manipulate search rankings through keyword stuffing and targeted anchor text.

  • Advertising Platform: The attackers are openly promoting their Telegram channel within every link, signaling a public affiliate or service promotion strategy rather than subtle spam.

  • Involvement of Known Black-Hat Services: The domain seo-anomaly.com is associated with a black-hat SEO service, indicating the attackers are leveraging underhanded tactics to sabotage competitors or manipulate rankings.

Impact on My Website

As a result of this campaign:

  • My primary keywords are experiencing a decline in rankings.
  • Competitors are now appearing higher for keywords where I previously held top positions.

Questions and Seeking Advice

Negative SEO remains a challenging threat, especially when offensive parties employ large volumes of spammy backlinks and targeted anchor text. Some questions I am contemplating include:

  • What urgent steps should be taken to counteract and mitigate this negative SEO assault?
  • How can I effectively disavow these spam links and prevent further damage?
  • Are there best practices for monitoring and safeguarding against large-scale black-hat SEO attacks?
  • What long-term strategies can help protect my site’s integrity and search rankings?

Final Thoughts

This experience underscores the importance of proactive SEO management, including regular backlink audits and maintaining healthy backlink profiles. While negative SEO can be disheartening, understanding the tactics employed allows strategists to develop robust defenses.
